's bringing the northeast once again to its knees. thousands of superstorm sandy victims in new york and in new jersey enduring damaging winds and driving snow and bitter cold temperatures, all in the dark. as of 3:00 this morning, there are close to 700,000 customers in new york and new jersey, who don't have power. that number's rising. more than 1,500 flights have already been canceled, and just when service on the long island rail road was returning to normal, it was again suspended last night. team coverage of this early winter storm. susan candiotti is with us live from asbury park in new jersey. rob marciano is live in staten island, where they are reeling from last week's hurricane. so much damage there, rob. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, soledad. boy, they didn't need this. and we didn't actually expect to be this much snow. we knew there would be some snow, but not to the point where it was piling up. so this is an area where during the height of sandy, the storm surge was up and over my shoulders. so most of these homes, at least their first floor has been wiped

christmas tree but only briefly. they got back to the job at hand. let's check in now with sandy to see what is on radar tonight. >> we have spotty showers around the bay area but what is getting interesting is the snow that has been developing. let's go to the live doppler and around the ukiah area near the clear lake north of clear lake you look very carefully we have had some pink showing up. mixed precipitation east of the ukiah area and north of lake port so the mountains there getting some colder moving in. where we are getting showers rate now. around monterey it's coming down. it's light to moderate at this hour. watsonville very light returns. we are far from through as you look at this the wider picture here look at the lightning strike that we have been seeing just northwest of the bay area. they have been basically dissipating but we are seeing some lightning strike so keep it in mine. thunderstorm possibility in the poker. sierra nevada chain control on interstate 80. highway 50 state route 4 and 88. they are getting some snow so far half foot and counte counteding.

superstorm sandy left behind in seaside heights, new jersey. he met with first responders who lost their homes. he also checked out the battered coastline by helicopter yesterday. president obama vows to help the area make a complete recovery. >> but the president's made it clear that we're going to do everything we can to make sure that the corps is fully funded, that fema has what it needs, and that all the programs that exist under the auspices of the federal government are not only continue to exist, but are funded, so that we can make sure that -- that -- that this area of the country is fully, fully, fully restored. >> the damage on the ground is just shocking when you look at it from the air, alina. it is just staggering. you can see just how fierce the storm was. about 600 customers still have no electricity in new jersey over the weekend. three weeks now, after the storm hit. >> i am alive. that's the message one of at least 11 men injured in that oil platform explosion in the gulf of mexico wanted to send his family. we're also getting a look at the explosion the very mom

by hurricane sandy. the storm exposed the remains of a shipwreck on the dunes of new york's fire island on long island. the wreckage is believed to be a four-masted canadian coal schooner called "the bessy white." the ship became visible when the storm shifted the dunes more than 70 feet. how about that? >> it shows how powerful that storm really was. >> took an almost direct hit. a lot of damage there. >> ron, thanks. >>> meantime, the search this morning is still on for two oil workers missing after a disastrous explosion and fire that ripped through a gulf oil rig. 11 workers are injured. and abc's john schriffen is in new orleans with the very latest. john, what do we know? >> reporter: well, bianna, good morning. we know that the coast guard launched the chopper just a short while ago to resume the search from the air. all night, they've been out in boats just like this one, using night vision goggles and infrared technology. so far, there's been no sign of the two, missing workers. but the coast guard is using the latest technology to find them before it's too late. it's an all-out effort

's been four weeks since superstorm sandy ripped through the northeast. new jersey commuters finally able to take the path trains to lower manhattan again. stations resume service today along the world trade center line. you can see here how floodwaters gushed into the commuter rail stations in new jersey after sandy hit. crews had to remove millions of gallons of water from the tracks and platforms and fix those damaged switching systems. hoboken's path storage had the worst damage. it remains closed. >>> talk about adding insult to injury. the long island power authority slapped its customers with normal electric bills. we are talking about folks who had spent weeks without power due to superstorm sandy. well, the power company acted as if the outages never happened. they charged customers an estimatedrated rate that covered the entire billing cycle. >>> actor morgan freeman is putting his voice behind a new ad. here's what he said. >> freedom, justice, and human dignity have always guided our journey towards a more perfect union. now across our country we are standing together for the
